A Brief Introduction
Salvador was the first capital of Brazil when the Portuguese seat of royal administration was placed there. It later became the first slave market in the New World, a time when the exquisite, high-baroque Church of São Francisco was constructed. The historic neighborhood of Pelourinho, which contains the largest accumulation of colonial architecture from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Americas, faces problems of traffic, pollution, overpopulation, crime, and the impact of tourism. The project was a joint venture between several institutions to create a data set that would be used for site management and restoration.
Statement of Data QualityIn 2004 the facades of colonial-period structures and the Church of São Francisco in the Anchieta Plaza were digitally preserved to aid restoration works along the historic facades. Additional interior and exterior data for the buildings was not captured as part of this project. Additional data for the historic buildings may be added to the project if it becomes available.
