A Brief Introduction
California's beautiful Presidio, located within the Golden Gate Recreation Area at the entry to San Francisco Bay, saw continuous use as a military base for 218 years by the Spanish, Mexican, and American armies. The Presidio Trust has actively restored and managed the site, and the park today looks very much as it did when the base was finally decommissioned 15 years ago. In an effort to continue their conservation efforts, the Presidio Trust commissioned a Digital Preservation Project of the historic buildings.
Statement of Data QualityThe Presidio data set has been captured in three phases of work. The historic Mesa Room in the Officers’ Club was captured to aid conservation work. The success of this Digital Preservation phase led to the documentation of the Historic Plaza de Armas; the exterior of the Officers’ Club was completely documented. Additionally, contextual information was gathered from many of the historic buildings surrounding the Officers’ Club. Later a team of students from UC Berkeley were taught Digital Preservation techniques on-site and used Building 1204 of Fort Scott as the class project. This course was co-funded by CyArk and the data was contributed to the existing Presidio archive. Other organizations have conducted additional laser scanning and CyArk is working to supplement the Presidio data with these additional data sets.
