A Brief Introduction
The city made famous by its centuries long preservation in the ash of Mt. Vesuvious, Pompeii later suffered from poor conservation and management. Pompeii was CyArk’s first project, and the first time that high definition laser scanning served to document a cultural heritage site.
Statement of Data QualityThe data collected for Pompeii focused on the city’s Forum to create a resource management tool. The complexity of the vast city-site made a detailed focus as a first step necessary, and so the hub of ancient city life, the Forum, was chosen. The open area of the Forum is documented in near-completeness. Some peripheral rooms/structures were also captured, such as the Basilica (Roman marketplace) and the Macellum. However, project limitations prevented other peripheral structures, such as the Temple of Apollo, from being within the scope. Additional photographs and other media were provided for non-scope structures where possible to provide further documentation of the Forum’s surroundings and context. CyArk may add additional data to Pompeii as it becomes available.
