Description

Before bathing, Romans would have their bodies scraped clean of dirt and oil using a curved metal implement called a strigil. Then they would proceed to the various rooms of different temperatures, often starting in the warm room (tepidarium) followed by the hot bath (caldarium) closest to the furnace (praefurnium), then onward to a cold room with a cold pool (frigidarium). This panoramic image starts facing the reconstructed Frigidarium located in the northern portion of the structure, with the Tepidarium One basin in front of it. The short pillars at the bottom of the tepidarium are hypocausts, between which hot air from the furnaces would be circulated to warm the floor slabs placed atop them. This image can be manipulated to see frigidaria, tepidaria, and caldaria from the various construction phases of the Baths.
