Northwestern Plaza Menor Terrace, with Rocas vents

Northwestern Plaza Menor Terrace, with Rocas vents

Description

From the Plaza Mayor Terrace the Black and White Staircase leads to the smaller, elevated Plaza Menor Terrace, where the smaller Plaza Menor sits before the Black and White Portal (seen to the north in this picture) of Building A (the Castillo). The top surface of Plaza Menor is level with the base of Building A and below the plaza's surface is a system of stone-lined drains and canals, part of the Rocas - the entrance to one of these drains is visible in this photo, along with a series of stone-lined vents which are thought to have produced the effect of Temple A 'roaring' as water cascaded under it. The best preserved section of the Plaza Menor is of black limestone; it seems likely that the the matching section to the south was of white granite, preserving the color duality which characterizes the central, ceremonial approach to the Castillo.
