A Brief Introduction
The ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá is one of the world's most popular tourist attractions, recently being inducted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Its historical and archaeological significance is equally immense. The restored area of the site covers 5 square kilometers and is home to El Caracol, one of the oldest standing observatories in the Americas, underscoring the advanced astrological studies of the Maya.
Statement of Data QualityChichén Itzá was documented for the Chabot Space and Science Center’s “Maya Skies” video exhibition. The focus was El Caracol, which was fully documented. Additionally, six structures within the city’s civic core were documented to provide contextual information. There are many additional monuments not yet Digitally Preserved which may be added to the Chichén Itzá project when they become available.
